National Funding Agencies

The Health Research Council of New Zealand

“The HRC is the major government-funded agency responsible for purchasing and co-ordinating health research and fostering the health research workforce in New Zealand.”

The Auckland Medical Research Foundation

“The Auckland Medical Research Foundation is dedicated to supporting medical research within New Zealand. Our key focus is to financially support medical researchers….in furthering their international collaborations and gaining invaluable off-shore knowledge along with repatriating our kiwi medical researchers, scientists and doctors back to New Zealand.”

The Lottery Health Research Grant

“This committee makes grants for research into the cause, prevention and treatment of disorders affecting the health of New Zealanders, as well as research advancing health and biomedical science for the ultimate benefit of New Zealanders.”

Foundation of Research, Science and Technology (FoRST) 

“We invest close to $500 million a year in science and technology research on behalf of the New Zealand Government, seeking benefits to New Zealand’s economy, environment and society.”

International Funding Agencies

National Eye Institute, National Institutes of Health, USA

“The mission of the National Eye Institute (NEI) is to conduct and support vision research and education programs that protect and prolong vision”.

The MVRC currently holds NIH subcontracts with collaborators in the USA. These include: Professor Kevin Schey, Vanderbilt University, Tennessee; Prof. Thomas White, SUNY, Stony Brook University, New York; Prof. Doug Tobias, University of California Irvine, California.

Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science.

“The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) was established with an imperial endowment in 1932. Since its founding, JSPS’s mission has been to advance science. As Japan’s premier research funding agency, JSPS carries out a diverse program that includes funding scientific research, fostering young researchers, promoting international scientific exchange, and supporting the reform and globalization of universities”.

We have a collaboration with Dr Yoskue Nakazawa (Keio University, Tokyo, Japan) that is jointly funded by JSPS and a Catalyst Seeding Grant.
